Ruggles Larson is boxing in this picture at the 1949 Tacoma Golden Gloves, the year the amateur boxing tournament started in Tacoma. Larson, a 1952 Lincoln High School graduate, also fought in the Oakland Golden Gloves and won titles in both 1953 and 1954 at 132 pounds. The idea of a citywide amateur boxing tournament named Golden Gloves started in Chicago in 1923 and other cities across the country picked up on the idea. Later, winners from selected states and regions headed to Chicago to meet in the Chicago Golden Gloves. The national Golden Gloves began in 1962 and many participants have gone to fame as pros, including Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, and Joe Frazier. Ruggles fought in 119 amateur bouts, winning 93 and losing 23 with three draws.Lexicon
