Description

In a black and white photo, donated by Lea McMillan, four handball players compete on a court. The players include, left to right, Joey Maker, Irish and Canadian National Singles Champion, Gordy Pfeifer, Steve August, National YMCA Singles Champion, and Lea McMillan. Pfeifer was an accomplished handball player in the Pacific Northwest. The University of Puget Sound Hall of Fame athlete — he played basketball, baseball and golf — won 15 world, national or professional handball titles including consecutive United States Handball Singles Championships in 1971-72. Pfeifer was named the Pierce County Athlete of the Year in 1971 and was a Seattle Post-Intelligencer Man of the Year nominee in 1972. Pfeifer also authored A Lifetime Reference Guidebook to Handball and Racquetball in 1975. He was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. McMillan was a superb player in his own right. He won the 1964 Handball championships and multiple singles and doubles open and state championships. McMillan, a Lincoln High of Tacoma graduate, played for the Tacoma Elks, Tacoma YMCA, the University of Washington and coached at UW, Bremerton and Tacoma YMCA and for the Elks. He is in the U.S. Handball of Fame.
