Description

Former University of Puget Sound star baseball player Mick Kelleher went on to play and coach in the major leagues. Kelleher, who played at UPS during the 1968 and 1969 seasons, was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in third round of the 1969 June draft. Kelleher played 622 games for the Cardinals (1972-73), Houston Astros (1974), Chicago Cubs (1976-80), Detroit Tigers (1981-82) and California Angels (1982) and coached for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1986), Tigers (2003-05) and New York Yankees (2009-14). Kelleher is perhaps best known for a play during the second game a doubleheader against the San Diego Padres on Aug. 7, 1977. Kelleher, playing for the Cubs, objected to a hard slide at second base by San Diego’s Dave Kingman. Kelleher, at 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, jumped onto Kingman’s back despite the difference of 9 inches in height and 40 pounds. The play resulted in a bench-clearing brawl. Kelleher retired with a career .213 batting average in 1,081 at bats.
