Description

A Seattle Tennis Club trophy won by doubles team Marilyn Kropf and Jenny Appel is shown in this black and white photograph in 1979. Marilyn (Kropf) Appel, a Tacoma native and Lincoln High product, started playing tennis on the boy’s varsity tennis team at Lincoln in 1947. Appel challenged for a position on the team and won, becoming the first girl in Lincoln’s history to play on the boys team. She went on to win every match for two years and became the first female letter winner. From 1946-48 Appel won every club and city championship and toured throughout the Northwest, winning many tournaments. She also claimed the Pacific Northwest Junior Women’s Singles Championship in 1948. Appel went on to attend the University of Washington and became an All-University Women’s Tennis champion. Appel continued to play tennis throughout her lifetime and taught her four daughters at Mercer Island High School where they were on championship teams. Appel served as a tennis instructor at Jack Kramer Country Club, Blue Ridge Tennis Club and was a member of the Seattle Tennis Club. Appel was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Photo donated by Jim Appel.
