Description

Players from a Japanese baseball team that played in the 1990 Goodwill Games autographed this baseball. It was the second time this international, multi-sport event that was created by Ted Turner happened. The second Goodwill Games were held in Seattle and Tacoma and across the state of Washington. The first Goodwill Games were played in 1986 and held in Moscow. The Goodwill Games were created because of the political tension surrounding the Olympics in the 1980s. After the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, the United States and other western countries boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. As an alternative to the Olympics, the Goodwill Games in 1990 had about 2,300 athletes from 54 countries compete in 21 sports in Seattle, Tacoma, Spokane and the Tri-Cities. Besides baseball, other sports included in the Goodwill Games were basketball, swimming, track, figure skating, gymnastics, boxing, ice hockey, rowing, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. The baseball games were played in Tacoma at Cheney Stadium. Cuba took first place in baseball, Japan placed second and the United States placed third.
