Description

Media mogul Ted Turner created the Goodwill Games, and the second edition was held in the Seattle area in 1990. A total of 54 nations were represented by 2,312 athletes. The baseball competition was held at Cheney Stadium. Cuba won the gold medal, Japan won the silver medal and the United States won the bronze medal. The Tacoma Dome was the venue for gymnastics, figure skating and the semifinals and finals for men’s ice hockey, which was won by the Soviet Union over the United States in the gold medal game. The Goodwill Games’ lasting legacy to the south Puget Sound region is the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, which was constructed for the Goodwill Games. The King County Aquatic Center has been the site for Olympic Trials, NCAA championships, Pacific-12 Conference meets and U.S. National events.
