Description

Here is a black-and-white photo of the 1953 Cheney Studs Pee Wee football team in Tacoma. Ben Cheney, a successful businessman in timber, was a financial supporter of the Cheney Studs, which had teams in football, basketball, baseball and hockey. Over the years, Cheney opened the doors for thousands of youths to play sports. “Ben was the greatest friend of youth that Tacoma ever had,” said Doug McArthur. Cheney Stadium, home of the Tacoma Rainiers, is named after Ben Cheney, who was also a huge supporter of Tacoma's Triple A minor league baseball teams. Jerry Cudney, who was active in sports while growing up in Tacoma, was on this 1953 Cheney Studs team in this photo. At age 11 in 1952, Cudney played on the Pee-Wee league champs in baseball and in 1953 he played on the Pee-Wee champs in hockey. The photo was donated by Cudney.
