Description

Olympic shot putter Mac Wilkins smiles in a black and white photograph of him during the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. Wilkins was a standout track and field athlete and helped his high school, Clover Park, win the 1968 state championship. He was also a starting receiver for the Warriors football team. Wilkins’ family moved to Beaverton, Oregon, during his high school career and it’s where he rose to prominence in the track community. Wilkins went on to compete at the University of Oregon, winning the NCAA discus title in 1972 and 1973 and earning All-American honors his final season. Wilkins was nationally ranked in the throwing disciplines and set a world discus record four times and American record five times. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Wilkins won the gold medal in the discus, a silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and was fifth at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Wilkins was the world’s top-ranked discus thrower in 1976 and 1980, winning eight national championships including six straight from 1976-82. Wilkins was voted by the USATF team to carry the flag at the 1983 World Championships and at the 1988 Olympics in South Korea. He was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
