Description

A pair of spiked track shoes worn by Peninsula High graduate Doris Brown Heritage, with her signature on the outside of the right shoe. Brown Heritage was a two-time Olympian in the 800 meters (1968, 1972). She won the first marathon she entered, the Vancouver Marathon in 1976. She finished second at the New York Marathon that same year. Brown Heritage graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1964 and coached cross country at the school. She coached the U.S. Olympic team in 1984 and served on the IAAF cross-country committee. In 2016, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Brown Heritage would be the namesake for the NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year Award. She won the International Cross Country Championships five times in a row from 1967–71 and won silver medals in the 800 meters at the Pan American Games, in 1967 and 1971. She was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, National Track Coaches Hall of Fame and National Distance Running Hall of Fame.
