Former USA Soccer great Michelle Akers holds a plaque upon her induction into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame during a Seattle Sounders MSL game at Qwest Field on August 29, 2009. Also pictured with her is Marc Blau, right, assistant director sports hall of fame and Clay Huntington, founder of the sports hall of fame. Akers, who starred at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, was named a three-time All-American leading the Scots to a state title her junior season in 1984 and a third-place finish as a senior. Akers went on to play at Division I University of Central Florida in Orlando because it offered her a scholarship. Akers success skyrocketed. She became a four-time All-American for the Golden Knights and was already a star on the U.S. National team before she graduated. Akers became the first female soccer superstar and played in five world championships, winning two World Cups — including the 1991 World Cup where she scored 10 goals, two in the final, to earn the Golden Boot award as the top-scoring player. She also was a driving force for Team USA when it won the 1992 Olympic gold medal. Akers retired after 15 seasons and finished with 105 goals in 153 games. In 2000 Akers was named the FIFA Player of the Century and also earned FIFA’s Order of Merit, its highest honor. She was inducted into he US Soccer Association’s Hall of Fame in 2004.
