Description

A black hockey puck made from vulcanized rubber with an octagonal orange logo on one side was used during the 1949 season by the Tacoma Rockets of the Pacific Coast Hockey League, even though the puck says “National Hockey League.” Printed on the lower part of the octagonal logo is “Art Ross Tyer.” Art Ross was a Canadian player and executive from 1905-54, winning the Stanley Cup as a player in 1907 with the Kenora Thistles and 1908 with the Montreal Wanderers. Ross, who is created with creating the modern hockey puck still in use, was the first coach and general manager of the Boston Bruins in 1924. In 1947 Ross donated the Art Ross Trophy, which is awarded to the leading scorer of the NHL regular season. Ross was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1949.
