The Gretchen Kunigk-Fraser Trophy presented by the Tacoma Athletic Commission is named for Tacoma’s most accomplished skier. The trophy was first awarded in 1948, the year Kunigk-Fraser became the first American to win a skiing gold medal at the Olympics. She also won a silver medal at the ‘48 Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Janette Burr of Seattle was the first recipient of the trophy. Burr had an accomplished professional career of her own and was inducted into the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 1970. She also served as Lucile Ball’s skiing stunt double in an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
