Long before the ingenuity of ski designers created equipment that made the sport easier for most people, hitting the slopes meant strapping into a pair of wood planks like these donated by Silver Skis champ Shirley Fopp. These finely crafted wood skis from the 1920s did not have metal edges, making turning and controlling speed more challenging than modern skis. They are also longer and straighter than modern skis, which typically are easier control because they are wider at the tip and tail but skinnier under foot.Lexicon
