Description

After a couple rain outs and some assistance from Fort Lewis to burn the infield dry, the first baseball game at Cheney Stadium was played April 16, 1960 before a standing room only crowd. Tacoma, then the top minor league affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, played the Portland Beavers. Triple-A baseball is still played at Cheney Stadium. For several years now, Tacoma has been the longest tenured city in the Pacific Coast League. Backed primarily by lumber entrepreneur Ben Cheney, the stadium was built in just 100 days. This photo was taken from the land outside the stadium beyond right field. It is now part of Henry Foss High School.
