The Studs began over 65 years ago in 1954 and were started by financial support from Ben Cheney of Tacoma. Beginning in the early 1950s when Ben Cheney began to sponsor them, they had a successful run and qualified for the American Amateur Baseball Congress national tournament three times in five years, placing second in 1955 and 1959 and winning it all in 1960. Cheney was a major supporter of local sports, both professional and amateur. The Seattle Cheney Studs are one of the oldest amateur baseball organizations in the country. They were started in 1954 by Ben Cheney. The “Studs” nickname comes from Cheney's lumber company that copyrighted the 2X4 stud for building homes.Lexicon
