Ray Barnes, in the dark Pacific Lutheran College #21 jersey on the left of the referee, pursues a Whitworth College running back in a game played in Spokane back in 1952. After graduating from Puyallup High School in 1949, Barnes played football at the University of Washington for two years and then transferred to PLC. Barnes, born in Nebraska in 1931, played guard on offense and linebacker on defense and made all-conference, all-northwest and all-coast at Pacific Lutheran and was honorable mention All-American. After graduating from college, he went on to coach wrestling at his high school alma mater Puyallup from 1956-70, winning 115 dual matches and losing just 36 matches. He was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986. He also coached football at Puyallup for 12 years. After coaching, he became Puyallup High School's athletic director.Lexicon
