Description

Ray Barnes posted a 123-18 dual-meet record over 15 years after starting the wrestling program at Puyallup High School in 1955. He was a 1949 graduate of Puyallup who went on to play football at the University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University. Barnes gave up coaching in 1970 to become the athletic director for the Puyallup School District. He was inducted into the Washington State Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986 and the state Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in 1991. His son, Brent, went on to coach Lake Stevens High School to 11 wrestling state team championships. He was inducted into the Washington State Coaches Hall of Fame in 2017. His grandson, Burke, wrestled for his dad at Lake Stevens and became the second wrestler in state history to win four individual championships.
