Description

Puyallup High School's Lyle Nicolet, right, is congratulated by Stan Bates after winning the state wrestling championship at 157 pounds in 1960, the first Vikings wrestler to do so. Bates earned 10 varsity letters in three sports at the University of Puget Sound before working at Washington State University, becoming athletic director in 1954. Bates went on to become commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference.
