Tacoma's Mel Maughey sits in his No. 7 midget racing car that he raced. Maughey owned five or six midget race cars and was a frequent racer. Midget car racing has attracted the famous names of the sport like A.J. Foyt, who raced stock cars in NASCAR and won several major races. Midget car racing began Aug. 10, 1933 at Loyola High School's stadium in Los Angeles as a weekly race. Its popularity quickly spread across the United States.
