Description

Mel Maughey, wearing his helmet and racing clothes, is presented with a trophy after winning a midget car race in Tacoma. The first midget car race happened in 1933 in Los Angeles and by the late 1940s Tacoma had its own track and was holding races. In 1941, car racing returned to Tacoma when a wooden, 2-mile track was built in Tacoma. In the 1920s, another Tacoma track was considered to be the second best race track in the country, trailing only the Indianapolis 500. An arson fire destroyed the grandstands, which were rebuilt but it eventually closed.
