Description

Driving in car No. 63, Mel Maughey tries to hang on to the lead as he races along in his midget race car on an oval track at Tacoma's Athletic Park on 14th and South Sprague. Back in the 1950s, the Tacoma oval track was popular and well attended by fans as this photo shows. In addition to the Tacoma race track on 14th and South Sprague, there were midget car races at Seattle Speed Bowl, which opened in 1936 and hosted races and closed during World War II, never to open again.
