Description

Mel Maughey, wearing his racing gear, stands next to his midget race car, No. 65. It's one of five or six of his midget race cars he owned and he was an avid racer. Tacoma had a reputation for being race car friendly. From 1914 to 1922, Tacoma Speedway was one of the most popular race tracks in the country. It was considered to be second only to the Indianapolis Motor speedway. After an arson fire destroyed the wooden grandstands in 1920, the track closed two years later.
