With a large crowd watching, Mel Maughey holds a U. S. flag as he drives his midget race car, ready to begin another race. He was driving in his No. 63 midget race car. It was one of six race cars he owned. He was an avid racer and a popular face at racing events. The sport is still going strong. There is a Washington Midget Racing Association that began its 69th season of racing in 2018. Midget racing has a rich history in Tacoma. Midget car racing began in California in 1934 and spread to Tacoma by the late 1940s.
