Description

Here is a jacket worn by coaches of the Cheney Studs baseball team. Since they first started back in 1954, the Cheney Studs have had been a mix of current college players and ex-pro players and have a successful tradition. Ben Cheney, a successful businessman from Tacoma who was a strong supporter of sports, sponsored the team from the start and the team was named after him. In 2008 and 2010, the Cheney Studs finished second in the NBC world Series in Wichita, Kansas. Over 100 former and active pro baseball players have worn the Cheney Studs uniform. Cheney, who was born in 1905 and died in 1971, started the Cheney Lumber Company in 1936 and it grew into a success company. As a sports enthusiast, Cheney sponsored sports in all the towns he had his lumber company. He had an 11 percent ownership in the San Francisco Giants. He contributed $100,000 to build Tacoma's Triple A baseball stadium in 1960 and today it is named Cheney Stadium.
