Description

The silver-globe trophy was awarded to Eugene Riggs, the 1937 winner of the City of Tacoma championship soap box derby in 1937. Riggs was 10 years old when he won the race and went on to compete at the national championships in Akron, Ohio. Riggs went on to graduate from Stadium High School, served in the U.S. Navy, graduated from the University of Washington dental school and practiced in Lakewood until his retirement in 2000. Soap box derby racing began in 1933 and was a popular activity for youth during the decades to come. The first official All-American Soap Box Derby in Dayton, Ohio, was in 1934. The national race ran continuously until a four-year hiatus during World War II and then resumed in 1946 and has been held every year since. Tacoma held its first soap box derby in 1940.
