Description

Mel Maughey races along the track in his No. 42 midget race car with Ivan's Restaurant written on the hood of his car. Tacoma was a popular place for midget race cars events back in the '50s. In 1956, Dick Boness built a paved, quarter-mile race track, Spanaway Speedway, and operated it for 42 years. The track was frequently used for almost 50 years into the '90s and a housing development is now built on the old race track. He also built Tenino Speedway and purchased the Stateline Speedway in Spokane and ran it for three years.
