Description

With his pit crew standing behind him, Mel Maughey sits in his No. 27 midget race car. Maughey and his crew were frequent participants at midget auto races in Tacoma. Other drivers and pit crews behind Maughey in the picture were getting ready for another race. Maughey had about six midget race cars. For 42 years, Dick Boness operated the Spanaway Speedway after building it in 1956. He later built the Tenino Speedway and purchased the Stateline Speedway in Spokane for three years.
