Description

In his No. 27 midget race car, Mel Maughey speeds along with 10 other cars entered in the race. Midget car races were a popular event in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1956, a paved, quarter-mile track on South Sprague Street was built in Tacoma and was a popular site until the mid 1990s. The track was torn down and houses were built in its place. From 1914 to the early 1920s, the Tacoma Speedway, a 2-mile wooden board race track, operated and was renowned nationally. It was considered to be second in the country in race tracks only to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
