Winning car in the 1973 Tacoma Kiwanis Club Soap Box Derby. A local Kiwanis club sponsored the annual race that was held on a track near Cheney Stadium. Soap box derby cars were built and driven by 11 to 17 year old boys (and later beginning in 1971 girls). Local winners could advance to a national race held in Akron, Ohio. Two Tacoma winners – Gregory Schumacher and David Krussow – became national champs in the 1960s. The old asphalt track is still there, but it is no longer used. Today the only national qualifier race in Washington is in Stanwood, Washington.Lexicon
