A catcher’s mask is believed to be from the late 1800s-early 1900s.
According to the Baseball Hall of Fame, the use of the curveball in the 1860s and 1870s necessitated the use of a catcher’s mask as they needed to be closer to home plate to catch the curveball. Harvard team captain Fred Thayer is credited with inventing the catcher’s mask for his college baseball team. Harvard catcher James Tyng is believed to be the first player to wear a mask during a game.
