The Tacoma Giants baseball team won this ring when they won the Pacific Coast League championship in 1961. “Tacoma Champions 1961” is engraved under the red stone.
Dr. Sam Adams, the team physician for the Tacoma Giants, donated his ring. The ring originally belonged to manager John “Red” Davis and Dr. Adams was not given a ring which made Red pretty upset. Since, Red felt bad for “Doc” Adams and all the good he did to keep the players healthy, he gave Sam his ring.
Davis was manger of the Tacoma Giants from 1960 to 1962, Under Davis, the Giants went 97-57 in 1961. Dick Phillips was named the most valuable player for the Giants that year. Gaylord Perry, who went on to major league stardom, led an outstanding starting pitching rotation that season. The Giants played in Tacoma from 1960 to 1965 and then the San Francisco Giants moved their Triple-A affiliate to Phoenix in 1966. Then from 1966 to 1971 they were the Tacoma Cubs.
