Description

Here is an old Keystone Criterion 16mm movie camera, a model A-9 that was owned by John Jarstad, who donated this camera to the Tacoma Sports Museum. Jarstad was a pioneer in broadcast journalism in the 1940s and he played a major role in the growth of television news and sports production locally. He worked for newspapers in Bremerton, Boise and Syracuse. He also had sports and news programs aired on KOMO-TV, KIRO-TV, KTNT-TV and KTVW. Back in the late 1940s and 1950s, Jarstad would film the final minutes of games on his own camera and highlight clips on TV. Games he covered included high school football wrap ups, the University of Washington's football and basketball games in the 1950s. When he was the sports editor at the Bremerton Sun in the 1940s, his “Time Out” column covered Bremerton and Kitsap Peninsula athletes in the post-war years. Later, Jarstad did live broadcasts of the Tacoma Rainiers and hosted an outdoor show on KOMO-TV for 13 years.
