The Cheney Studs baseball team had a successful run immediately after Ben Cheney started the team when he began sponsoring them back in 1954. They qualified for the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) national tournament in 1954, finished second in both 1955 and 1959 and won it all in 1960. Ben Cheney, a successful businessman who made his money in the lumber industry, was a major supporter of local sports, both professional and amateur. In addition to supporting the Tacoma Rainiers of the Triple-A minor leagues, Cheney supported amateur sports that included baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer. In 1960, a new baseball stadium for the Tacoma Giants was built and named after Cheney, who contributed $100,000 to build the stadium. The Cheney Studs were also named after Ben Cheney.Lexicon
