Description

A black wool knit tank-style jersey was worn by “Irish” Pat McMurtry one of the area’s biggest stars in the Pacific Northwest. The boxer was homegrown, a legitimate title contender and potential heavyweight champion. McMurtry, a Tacoma native who won the NCAA heavyweight title in 1954, was ranked fifth among the world’s heavyweight. One of his biggest career highlights was a decision over George Chuvalo at Madison Square Garden in 1958, in which he wore these boxing shorts. McMurtry, who had a career record of 33-4-1, was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame and the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.
