Description

As a female batter swings at a pitch, umpire Tom Slee stands behind the plate calling balls and strikes. Slee was a longtime umpire in Tacoma. Women's and men's softball has remained popular in Tacoma over the years. Slowpitch softball started in 1956 when Tom Cross, who was the assistant superintendent of Tacoma's Metropolitan Park District, started the sport in Tacoma after he saw it played in Chicago. Until then, teams only played fastpitch.
