Description

Doug McArthur was a man with a big heart and an even bigger talent in various forms including sportscasting, sports executive, historian, coach and player. McArthur graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma and majored in communications at Washington State University and graduated from the College of Puget Sound, where he played third base for the Loggers. McArthur served in the Korean War and then returned to Tacoma to launch a long and successful sportscasting career. In 1956 McArthur became KTAC Radio’s sports director, and formed the Stanley’s Shoemen baseball team which went on to win the National Amateur Baseball Championship. In the 1960s, McAthur served as the superintendent of public recreation for the Metropolitan Park Distrct and Supervisor of Athletics for Tacoma School District. He was UPS’ athletics director from 1966-78, serving as the golf, baseball and women’s fastpitch coach. McArthur was also instrumental in the Tacoma Dome bond campaign in 1980 as a member of the Tacoma Athletic Commission.
