Rawlings Official Baseball for the Pacific Coast League signed in black ink by members of the 2002 Tacoma Rainiers. The 2002 squad – the AAA affiliate for the Seattle Mariners – finished the year with a 65-76 record under the leadership of manager Dan Rohn. Scott Podsednik stole 35 bases, scored 63 runs and drove in 61 to lead the team, while Juan Thomas hit a team-best 17 home runs and Ron Wright added 15. Local Mariners prospect Willie Bloomquist batted .270 and stole 20 bases. Brian Sweeney led the pitching staff with 142 innings pitched, while his nine victories tied Ken Cloude for the team lead. Future Mariners closer J.J. Putz started nine games for the Rainiers – with no relief appearances – and tallied a 3.83 earned run average.
