The Tacoma Mountaineers were a professional basketball team and they played one season in the Pacific Coast Conference back in the 1947-48 season. The Mountaineers are the only pro basketball team Tacoma has ever had. Tom Werner coached the Tacoma Mountaineers in their only season in the PCC. Marv Harshman and Tom Cross were the top players on Mountaineers. Brothers Bob and Jack Volker also played on the team. The Pacific Coast Conference was a long established league. In 2006, Seattle started a semi-pro basketball team, joined the American Basketball Association and used the mascot name, Mountaineers. The Pacific Coast professional basketball league was short lived. It lasted only two seasons, going from 1946 to 1948. It had nine teams in the Pacific Northwest, which were in the U.S. and in Canada. The Tacoma Mountaineers, Seattle Athletics and Astoria Royal Chinooks joined the league the same year for the 1947-48 season. The Portland Indians beat the Seattle Athletics 3-1 to win the championship.Lexicon
