Description

This is a black-and-white photo taken in 1943 of Gretchen Fraser, who was the first American ever to win a gold medal in the alpine combined event at the Olympics. She is feeding her 3-week-old son, Donald William Jr., in Vancouver, Washington, on Jan. 19, 1943. William's humorist birth announcement read “an applicant for the 1964 Olympics.” Fraser, who was born in Tacoma in 1919, became known as America's Lady of Skiing. In 1940, she made the Olympic ski team but the games were not held that year. At the 1948 Olympics, Fraser became the first American to win a gold medal in the alpine combined event. In 1939, she married Donald Fraser, who was on the 1936 U.S. Olympic ski team.
