Description

Marv Harshman wore this blue jacket in the opening ceremonies of the Pan American Games in Mexico back in 1975. Harshman, who lettered a total of 13 times playing four sports at Pacific Lutheran College back in the 1930s, was a successful college basketball for 40 years. He coached at his alma mater from 1945 to 1958, then at Washington State University for 13 years from 1958 to 1971 and then at the University of Washington from 1971 to 1985, retiring at age 67. The first Pan Am Games were held in Dallas in 1937, but participation was low and it was not counted in the records of the competition. A second Pan Am Games was held in 1951 at Buenos Aires and it had 18 sports competing. The second games were held in Mexico City in 1955 and there was a better turnout as 2,583 athletes from 22 countries competed in 17 sports. The Pan American games have been held every four years. In 1975 at the Pan Am Games in Mexico City, Harshman coached the gold medal winning U.S. basketball team. Harshman, who died in 2013 at age 95, served on the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1975 to 1981.
