Description

During practice with the U.S. basketball team, Marv Harshman wore this royal blue shirt with U.S.A. on the front at the 1975 Pan American Games in Mexico City. Like the Olympics, the Pan Am Games are held every four years. The idea of holding the Pan Am Games was first discussed at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles where Latin American representatives suggested the idea. The first Pan Am Games took place in 1937 in Dallas but attracted only a few athletes. It wasn't until 1951 that the next Pan Am Games were held and it became an ongoing event every four years. At the Pan Am Games in 2015, there were 6,132 athletes and 41 countries that competed. Harshman coached at three colleges over a 40-year span and won a combined 637 games. He launched his successful coaching career coaching football, basketball and baseball at his alma mater, Pacific Lutheran College from 1945 to 1958. He then coached basketball at Washington State University from 1958 to 1971 and at the University of Washington from 1971 to 1985. He was named Pac-10 coach of the year in 1982 and 1984 and he was NABC coach of the year for Division I in 1984. Harshman died in 2013 at age 95.
