Description

At the 1975 Pan American Games held in Mexico City, Marv Harshman wore this navy blue sweatshirt and shorts as he coached the U.S. basketball team at practices. The Pan American Games occur every four years and they began on a regular basis in 1951 when 2,513 athletes from 14 countries participated. In 1951, Buenos Aires hosted the inaugural Pan Am Games and they have been held every four years since. Harshman was coaching at Washington State University when he was selected to coach the U.S. team in the Pan Am Games. The U.S. is tops among all countries in medals won at the Pan Am Games, winning 2,064 gold medals and 4,713 medals total. Cuba is second with 2,124 medals. In 1975, the U.S. basketball team won a gold medal with Harshman coaching. Harshman's successful coaching career began at his alma mater, Pacific Lutheran College. After serving in World War II, Harshman coached at Pacific Lutheran from 1945 to 1958, then at WSU from 1958 to 1971 and then at UW from 1971 to 1985. Harshman, who died in 2013 at age 95, finished with a career 637-444 record.
