Description

This medallion was presented to Dori Kovanen for winning the 1984 NCAA women’s Division I soccer championship while at the University of North Carolina. Kovanen, a Stadium High product, was one of Washington state’s top athletes by the time she reached her senior year. Kovanen had 32 scholarship in five different sports but chose to play soccer at North Carolina. Kovanen earned a spot as a starter her freshman season in 1981 — the beginning of a dynasty that included winning the NCAA Division I championship that season and 18 titles since then. Kovanen was selected to play for the U.S. National team at the world championship, but a knee injury during practice ended that plan. Kovanen returned to UNC and won four total championships, earned three All-Conference honors, a regional tournament MVP and first and second-team All-America. Kovanen also coached at Stanford University before pursuing a career as a geologist. She was inducted into the Pierce-County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
