Description

Onnie Willis, a 1999 Wilson High School graduate, wore this Team USA jacket after earning a spot on the Junior Olympic National gymnastics team. Willis began her gymnastics career at the age of three and began training at the Puget Sound School of Gymnastics a year later. Willis had a stellar collegiate career. She earned a scholarship to UCLA where she went on to earn the Broderick Honda Cup Award for being named the nation’s top gymnast. Willis helped lead the Bruins to national championships in 2000-2003. She won the individual all-around title in 2001, becoming the first UCLA gymnast to earn the title. Willis earned All-America status 16 times and seven perfect 10 scores in her career. She was named the Pac-10 Gymnast of the year in 2003 and an all-around title in 2002. At the Junior Olympics, Willis won the all-around, vault and balance beam events. Willis was also an excellent track and field athlete at Wilson High in Tacoma. She won the 1999 state title in the triple jump, setting a school record. She was also third in the long jump. Willis was named the 1999 Tacoma Athletic Commission Athlete of the Year. She was inducted into the Tacoma Pierce-County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
