Description

Jerry Conine started his wrestling career as an undersized seventh grader and went on to compete in the Olympic Games. Conine, who sported this warm-up shirt as a member of the 1964 Olympic Team USA member, won the state wrestling championship in 1957 at 177-pounds while also playing football at Fife High School. He earned a scholarship to Washington State University where he earned two letters in football and four in wrestling. After placing third three years in a row in the Pacific Coast Championships, Conine shocked the sport by winning the national championship in his weight class. He did it by pinning three-time national collegiate heavyweight champion Joe James. The win earned him a berth at the Olympic Trials and eventually a spot on the 1964 Olympic Games where he finished sixth at 213 pounds in the freestyle. Conine later won national titles in 1965 in freestyle and in 1966 in Greco-Roman and went on to place sixth in two more world championships. Conine was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
