Description

Lincoln High School product Steve Whitaker wore this belt as part of his uniform while playing for the New York Yankees for three seasons. Whitaker signed to play baseball out of high school and went on to enjoy a 13-year professional career. Whitaker was a football and baseball star during his prep career for the Abes. He signed with the Yankees out of high school in 1962. In 1967, Whitaker played 122 games for New York, hitting .243 with 12 doubles, 11 home runs and 50 RBIs — as he lead the American League in outfield assists and double plays while batting in front of HOF greats Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Whitaker also played for the Seattle Pilots (69 games, .250 average, six home runs) and the San Francisco Giants. He finished his career with Hawaii of the Pacific Coast League in 1974. Whitaker also coached for the Chicago White Sox for four seasons and owned the Florida Yankee Baseball School from 1980-87. Whitaker was inducted into the Pierce-County Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
