These black leather boxing gloves were worn by “Irish” Pat McMurtry when he beat former heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles on July 13, 1956 in Tacoma. McMurtry was one of the area’s biggest stars in the Pacific Northwest, a boxer who was homegrown, a legitimate title contender and potential heavyweight champion. McMurtry won the NCAA heavyweight title in 1954, was ranked fifth among the world’s heavyweight. One of his biggest career highlights was a decision over George Chuvalo at Madison Square Garden in 1958, in which he wore these boxing shorts. McMurtry, who had a career record of 33-4-1, was inducted into the Washington State Sports Hall of Fame and the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame.
