Description

Lots of skiers lined up and waited for their turn on a rope tow at Paradise in this black-and-white photo taken in 1938. Because of popular demand for skiing a rope tow for skiers was installed at Paradise in 1937. It's an ideal spot for skiing. In addition to the step slopes, Paradise also averages 641 nearly inches of snow a year. The ski lifts were taken out in the 1970s. But you can still ski the slopes at Paradise by hiking up the slopes. The road from Longmire to Paradise is regularly plowed and is open year around, but drivers are required to carry chains. Paradise averages 641 inches of snow a year. In the late 1800's, park pioneer James Longmire and his daughter-in-law, Martha, went to Mount Rainier. When Maratha saw the flowery slopes, she said, “Oh, what a paradise.” And that's what Longmire called the slopes.
