With Tatoosh Range as a beautiful backdrop, three skiers race down the snowy slopes at Paradise on Mount Rainier back in 1936. Otto Larson is on the front right, Ariel Edmiston is on the left and Ken Syersen is in the back. Back in the 1930s, there used to be a race from Camp Muir at 10,000 feet to Paradise at 5,000 feet. Skiers would reach speeds of 60 miles per hour. In 1935, the U.S. Olympic downhill ski team held their tryouts at Paradise. A rope tow for skiers was built in 1937 and a T-bar for skiers was added three years later. Paradise averages 641 inches of a snow a year.
