Description

With Mount Rainier as a picturesque backdrop, skiers come out of Paradise Inn and head for the slopes in this black-and-white photo taken in 1937. Construction began on Paradise Inn in 1916 and the classic lodge opened in 1917. It quickly became a popular overnight lodging for skiers. A rope tow for skiers was built in 1937 at Paradise, making the snowy slopes a popular destination for skiers. At 5,400 feet, Paradise averages 641 inches of snow year. Construction started on the historic Paradise Inn in 1916 and one year later in 1917 the beautiful 121 room lodge opened. A piano was put in the lodge and it was played by President Truman during his visit in 1945. That piano is still in the hotel today.
